Addressing Drug Use and Misuse
Wednesday, October 16, 2019 @ 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm
Synopsis: Presentation Abstract: Addressing drug use and misuse within our child and adolescent populations continues to be a source of frustration and confusion. While learning to be more trauma informed, we often look at the traditional “tough love” approach in adult addictions work and question if we are being “too soft”? This presentation will discuss how timing, history, family, peers, culture and drugs come together to create a unique profile for each user and how our approach must adapt to their needs. Just as we have learned with other issues and interventions – one size actually fits no one. A historical overview of our country’s drug use, our attempts at control, looking at what the research tells us and where we are in the “war on drugs” will be discussed. Content draws heavily from Maia Salavitz’s Unbroken Brain, Johan Hari’s Chasing the Scream, and Dr. Gabor Mate’s In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts.
